SSL
Secure Sockets Layer - a security protocol that encrypts data transmitted between a website and its visitors.
What is SSL?
SSL (and its successor TLS) creates an encrypted connection between your browser and a website. Sites with SSL certificates show 'https://' and a padlock icon. SSL protects sensitive data like passwords and credit cards from being intercepted. It's now essential for all websites—not just those handling payments.
Example
When you log into your bank's website, SSL encryption ensures your password can't be intercepted by hackers on the same network.
